The Wind of Kraków: from Copernicus to Karol Wojtyla, the heart of Poland’s history

Rationale

Kraków emerged unscathed by the second world war; the impact of the 20th century was no more serious than acid rain. Its architectural heritage belongs to the past: the highest structures that dominate the landscape are the old church spires. It is a lively city with its own character and soul.

Surrounded by parks, the Old Town (Stare Miasto) is fascinating and dense. The main square, Rynek Główny, or “market square”, is surrounded by historical buildings, museums and churches. The Church of St. Adalbert dates back to the 10th century and is one of the oldest in the city. The most important museum, Czartoryski, possesses an extraordinary collection of artwork from all over Europe.

Kraków was the country’s capital for a long time, and even now remains its main centre for culture, art and university. With more than seven million visitors a year, it is the main international tourist destination in Poland. Its medieval historic centre was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978.
